Warm water fishing in cold water

Submitted by Don Mulder

It's still too cold for the warm water bass.  I went to the Hemet farm pond with Carl, Jerry, and Larry.  The fish had a bad case of lockjaw.  Couldn't even catch a sun fish!  Got a double on one cast and that was it.

Two for one!

And they were this big......

Submitted by Don Mulder

This little perch is the best I could do for size.  Went to Newport with Larry and Ray last Saturday 2-15-14 and caught a dozen dink perch.  A couple of bigger models were LDR’s (long distance releases).  Lots of bites for the first hour.  Conditions seemed perfect but no big fish.

More Surf Fishing

 Submitted by Don Mulder

Went to North Newport on Feb. 8th.  The ebbing tide and small breakers meant easy fishing; caught 7 Barred Surf Perch by 9:30.  Six on the Scrat and one on the Krabby Patty.  The Krabby Patty has been my go-to fly but the Scrat has been out fishing it consistently.

This Saturday, Feb. 15th looks like the best tide of the month.  February is the month when the big Perch are in the surf to spawn so now is a good time to go.

Picture is courtesy of George.  My camera got wet and quit working.  I waded out way too far and got hit by a rogue wave!

Monthly Meeting February 2014

February 2014 Monthly Meeting

Nick Vargas is a guy that defines the term urban angler. You won’t likely find him on a guided bonefish flat in the Bahamas or on a private trout stream in Patagonia. If you want to fish with Nick, your destination is going to be a local park or one of our many southern California beaches. Nick’s introduction to fly fishing started at a local park in Pico Rivera, with a well known resident in the park that amazes people with his fishing and fly-tying abilities. Nick learned to catch carp on the fly before it was cool and as you can tell from his photos, he knows how to catch bass too. If you walk into the Orvis shop in Pasadena, you’ll usually find Nick helping a customer, whether it is a seasoned angler or someone just getting started. Nick is also an excellent surf angler and that will be the focus of his presentation for our club. Come to the meeting on February 11th and help us welcome Nick Vargas.

Surf Fishing

Surf Fishing
submitted by Donald Mulder

I went to North Newport this a.m (Feb 1) and met up with A.J and George.  A fast, south moving current made for difficult line control, it broke up beside the jetties which were nicely fishable.  There was a fast incoming tide and the bite turned off at approx. 8:30.  Caught seven Barred Surf Perch and one Shovel Nosed Guitar Fish using two different flies. The flies were the Sand Crab we tied at Wednesday’s class and a knock-off of Kevin Green’s Scrat.  The fish showed no preference for the flies – catching was split equally between them.
